Compare four well-known ideal body weight formulas with the healthy BMI range for your height. Each formula gives a single number; real healthy weights cover a range.
This calculator gives a general estimate for adults and is not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or a registered dietitian before making health decisions.
How it works
All four formulas start from a base weight for a height of 5 feet (152.4 cm) and add a fixed amount for every inch above it. Devine's formula was created to dose medicines and is still used in hospitals today.
Devine: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft; women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg.
Robinson: men 52 kg + 1.9 kg; women 49 kg + 1.7 kg.
Miller: men 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg; women 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg.
Hamwi: men 48 kg + 2.7 kg; women 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg.
None of these formulas considers muscle, frame size or age, so treat them as reference points rather than targets.
Common questions
Which formula is best?
None is clearly best. The healthy BMI range is broader and more widely used; the formulas are useful mainly for comparison.
Does frame size matter?
Yes. People with a larger frame can be healthy above these numbers, and those with a small frame below them.
